| On
February 7, 2007 The Michigan Industrial Hygiene Society held
its annual industrial hygiene student awards meeting at Genitti's
"Hole in the Wall" Restaurant.
Continuing
with the well received program initiated last year, industrial
hygiene leaders from local industries were asked to provide
to the students a summary of their industry and how an industrial
hygienist interfaces in this industry. Roger Wabeke led off
the program and provided a brief overview of the independent
Industrial Hygiene Consultant; Dennis O'Brien provided a review
of career opportunities for the industrial hygienist in government
service; Deb Moilanen provided a overview of industrial hygiene
in the chemical industry; Doug Hodgkins gave the attendees
an overview of industrial hygiene activities for a large manufacturer;
and Mark Ferin provided a description of the unique challenges
an industrial hygienist has in the pharmaceuticals industry.
The session
was well attended with approximately 50 students, faculty,
and MIHS members present to recognize the academic achievements
of students from our two local universities. Accepting the
award from The University of Michigan was Matthew Johnson,
and making the presentation was Dr. Ted Zellers. Denise Marshall
received the honors from Wayne State University and making
the presentation was Wayne State University's new Occupational
and Environmental Health Sciences Program Director Dr. Edward
Kerfoot.
Each student
winner received an MIHS mug, a Cross pen with the MIHS logo;
and a redeemable certificate from MIHS worth $200. The certificate
may be used to take the Certified Industrial Hygienists examination
or the Michigan Industrial Hygiene Society – University
of Michigan Certification Review Course.
(Thank
you to MIHS Board Member, Rich McLonis, for taking the pictures.)
