Mini-Conference
Presentations:
The annual,
full day, MIHS Mini-Conference was held on October 10, 2006
at the MSU Management Education Center in Troy, Michigan.

There were 62 attendees. The following speakers and topics
were presented:
Understanding
the Epidemiology, Prevention & Control of Infectious Diseases
and Engineering Control Strategies for Environmental Containment
of Airborne & Droplet-Transmitted Diseases were presented
by: Russell N. Olmsted, MPH, CIC, President - Mi Society for
Infection Control, Epidemiologist- Infection Control Services,
Saint Joseph Mercy Health System, Ann Arbor, MI Russ presented
some recent findings from a research project involving portable
HEPA filter units in operating theatres.
Avian
and Pandemic Influenza The Threat of an Impending Pandemic
was presented by Terri Lee Dyke, RN, BSN, CIC; Infection Control
Nurse, Mi Dept of Cmty Hlth with specific recommendations
on how to prepare and develop a response plan.
Human Interface with Zoonotic Diseases - New Convergence of
Human & Animal Health was presented by Dr. Kimberly Signs,
DVM, Zoonotic Disease Epidemiologist, Mi Dept of Cmty Health.
With growing population centers and emerging animal diseases
serious public health consequences are inevitable.
Nanoparticle
Monitoring in Occupational Environments - Comparing and Contrasting
Measurement Metrics was presented by Scott Norman, TSI. Scott
gave an interesting overview of nanoparticle science and IH
aerosol measurement instrumentation.
AIHA Update presented by Cynthia A. Ostrowski
ABIH Update
presented by Lisa Quiggle
MIOSHA
update was presented by Martha Yoder, Acting Director, MiOSHA.
The program highlighted a number of current MIOSHA initiatives
and cooperative efforts with industry. The MIOSHA director
thanked MIHS for the opportunity to speak and commented how
she appreciated being able to speak with a number of people
informally after the meeting.
